Making a Move with a Pet

As your moving plans get underway, ask your self these questions...

Is my pet in good health?
Will he or she be a good traveler?
Will my pet be safe at our relocation destination?

If you answered yes to these questions, then take these steps to get your pet ready for the road.

If you're traveling long distance, consider plane travel. Here are some helpful hints and information to help you take care of your pet.

Carry health and rabies information with you. State health officials and the airlines require these documents. A licensed vet who has examined the animal within 10 days of transport must issue these papers.

Keep your pet's water and food bowls, grooming equipment and medication with you. Be sure to get any required vaccinations. Remember to keep the pet food with you also.

Federal regulations prohibit moving companies from shipping animals in the moving trucks. Pets and plants travel best with you in your own car.

Search for hotels that are pet friendly. Plan your route and make reservations in advance. If your pet should get lost contact animal control or the humane societies in the area. Provide description and pictures to everyone in the area. Take good pictures of your pet and have a written description and note any distinguishing marks. Leave phone numbers with the hotels, local animal agencies and humane societies in case you have to return home.

Having an ID tag is one of the most important preparations you can make for your pet. They should include your pets’ name, your name, address and phone number. Also the destination address and new phone number. If your pet has a microchip make sure that the online information is up to date. Most states require a rabies tag too.

Before leaving on your trip, be sure to walk your dog before you start the drive. Provide fresh water during stops. Reward your pet with a snack for being a good traveler.

Feed your pet as soon as you arrive at your destination.

Birds and small animals can travel in their cages. Birds are susceptible to drafts and can be easily frightened. You should cover the birdcage for the road trip. Remove the water to avoid spills.
